Why is light cast upon the sorrowful? These are the first words of Brahms’ Motet Op.74. And the answer unfolds as one listens to the program. Throughout history, when composers have dwelt on emotions of sadness and longing, they have produced some of the most movingly beautiful and uplifting music. Taking in a broad range of music, from Monteverdi Madrigals to Ravel’s luscious Chansons, the program includes Elgar’s arrangement for voices of Nimrod from his Enigma Variations and Samuel Barber’s haunting vocal version of his Adagio for Strings.
